11/09/2005: "Go! Go! Go!"
We're back from away. It was a nice little break, and we went to the movies to see Chicken Little. My review? 3.5 on the movie, which was cute, 1.0 on the theater which had far too many crying children in it. I understand: Chicken Little = kid's movie. But when the kid in question is screaming, Take Him Out Of The Theater.
Okay, end rant.
Much writing in the next week. I'll do my best to get here, but don't be surprised if it's not every day. I'm not even sure I'm going to be able to read blogs. Or much of anything else. I'm doing the five-pages-at-a-time thingee. Five pages. Take a break wherein I do something necessary, like walk, or have a meal, or pay bills. But the break is for one hour. Write another five. Repeat. Do this until the break includes sleep, or the brain is mush, whichever comes first. Do it again the next day.
I also have to do the art fact sheet for the book. Argh! What's even worse, I have to give Hq a picture to put on the time travel. Horrors! What are they thinking? I, for one, don't have any interest in seeing what a writer looks like. Only ill can come from this, mark my words.
So, when y'all are under the gun - what tricks do you use to plow through and just get the fucker done???? I thought about rewarding myself with treats, but the only treats we have in the house are for the puppy, and I'll pass.

I keep bribing myself to do a few more pages. I normally bribe with using the shows I have taped as a reward. Oh, and reading. I'm allowed to read in the evening IF I make my page count. Which reminds me...

I use the timer method - see how much I can write in 30-40 minutes, take a ten minute break, go back and try to top my previous count. That and my Grass Roots Greatest Hits CD at top volume can get me through almost anything.

Lol, Kim, I knew what you meant! Napping is the best!
Good luck Jordan. Let me know how the bribing went. I'll do the same with knitting.
Chris - that's a great approach. Hey, I used to know Rob Grill, the singer from the Grass Roots. Wow, that was a step back in the old time machine. I'll have to dig out my old albums. (Yes, I said albums. I'm that old)

JO!!!! You knew Rob Grill? Dang, woman, I want to be you for a while - if only to access your address book!
And I still have some albums, too. My kids call them "giant CDs."

Jo, I make myself take the breaks in the middle of a scene I'm excited about, that way I want to get back to it.
I have been known to start a scene on the laptop, continue on the Palm, switch to a pen and paper for places the Palm and keyboard can't easily go, then back to Palm then back to laptop
I even have bits of scenes written on chocolate bar wrapping paper, and I never throw any of that away until I'm finished the WIP and sometimes not even then.
Then you have the option of not writing, except that you have a contract with your editor, and she's depending on you, so even if you don't feel like it, if you don't write you're letting her down, not to mention all your faithful fans - like me - who are waiting oh so patiently for the book you don't feel like writing.
Jo I can read up to 12 Harlequin books a day, do you really REALLY want me to wait longer than I have to? I'm stuck here in a foreign country with so little to read that I read labels on imported foods, do you really want to torture me like that?
Then if the exciting stop trick and the guilt trick don't work, I can't help you
Hugs all the same

Chris, it was many years ago. He dated my roommate. Nice guy. (And if you're me, does that mean you get to finish my book?)
Wow, Sadhbh, 12 books a day? That's some fast reading. And great for you on your work ideas. That's a terrific approach!

Jo, make you a deal - I'll finish your book if you get mine finished in time for the GH. You'd like it. Lots of references to Grass Roots songs, and Rob is mentioned by name!

Jo, I'll finish your book for you if you like
But I'm not sure your editor will appreciate it
But the offer still stands
