Dec 6
I’ve been reading a bunch of stuff lately, enjoying Tess Gerritsen’s backlist books among others, and wallowing in the joy of the read. I’ve actually turned off the damn tv several nights just to turn one delicious page after another. Although I dearly hope the writer’s strike is settled soon so everyone can get their jobs back, I’m thinking it might be very very good if a bunch of people, tired of re-runs and reality shows, turned their attention to books. See? Silver Linings R Us.
I’ve not just been pulling away from television – I’ve been withdrawing from the internet as well. I’m not surfing much, and sorry, not posting much. I’ve got a very busy year ahead, chock full of deadlines (which is a good, but tiring issue) and I have this teeny little break. I can’t really go off on vacation as I’m expecting gallies from two books any minute, but I suppose this is a sort of vacation. I believe the inner, saner me who is usually shoved to the side when things have to get done, is very wisely putting books in my hand and not letting anything else distract. Not the holidays (we’re doing nothing – seriously nothing) not the weather (snow with a chance of more snow) not baking (no cookies this year). So it’s books and more books. I feel as if I’ve been given the opportunity for a fabulous holiday season – Bookmas perhaps, or possibly Novelkah?

We all need those down times, and if next year is going to be as busy as you think, then enjoy the reading time now.

December 8th, 2007 at 2:48 amHurray for a holiday filled with reading!
If I can get through the next few days, I’ll be done with classes, have all my grading finished, and will be FREE for a few weeks–wooooooo.
So, as long as we’re talking reading, anyone listen to podiobooks? They are my new favorite thing. Think serialized books available via iTunes/RSS/podcast catcher.
The best site I’ve found so far is at podiobooks dot com. (This way, you can fill housework/yard work/commute time with “books” as well. (By the way, I highly recommend the podiobook Crescent: it is magnificent.)
December 10th, 2007 at 3:37 pmHi Bailey – I’m really enjoying the reading. Books are so wonderful. I can’t believe I don’t read like this all the time. Of course, when I’m on deadline, I get narrow vision – let’s just hope I remember that I need to make even a bit of time every day to read. And thank you so much for the lovely card!
Thanks, Lis – I am!
Willa, I like to pretend. :)
Yay, Shawn for getting your classes finished. Breaks are good. :) I’ll give the podiobooks a shot – thanks for the tip.
December 11th, 2007 at 3:27 pmJo, Happy holidays to you & Dotes. Sometimes, the quietest, is the best.
I’m still hoping you’ll read one of my absolutely fave books of all time, Kathryn Shay’s SOMEONE TO BELIEVE IN. It’s about a conversative Senator (Clay, the hero, once a DA) who prosecuted a young woman (Bailey, the liberal heroine, who runs a website & shelter to get girls out of gangs) because she knew of a crime one of the kids had perpetrated. Now, Bailey is out of prison, still running the shelter, & sparring with Clay through the media. They are named by the Governor to a task force to decide how to allocate social service funds. There’s obviously more, as Bailey has a child out-of-wedlock & an Irish family who runs a pub, with 4 pushy brothers who want to interfere in her life. It has a dynamic relationship between h/h, interesting thoughts on how to handle out-of-control teens, the public life of politicians, etc. I just reread it, & it’s as good as the first time, a terrific & unusual Romance. If you’re looking for more books, this one is terrific.
