A Month of Wonderful Movies
This month, Turner Classic Movies is having their annual 31 days of Oscar, which means a bounty of fabulous films for these writers-strike days. I went to the monthly schedule and sat down with my DVR and programmed a whole slew of old favorites like Topper, I Married a Witch, the original Born Yesterday with Judy Holliday, The Awful Truth, A Thousand Clowns, My Favorite Wife….well, you get the picture.
I still haven’t finished all my RITA books yet, but some are very good. Then of course I have a book due end of Feb, and wouldn’t you know, that’s kind of occupying most of whatever brain cells that I have left. Oddly on this one, I seem to be in a weird pattern of writing the chapter, then dreaming revisions that night, then re-writing the chapter, and moving on to do the same thing with the next chapter. Usually I don’t dream my revisions (I actually don’t think it’s fully dreaming. It’s that space where I’m not completely asleep but not really awake) until I’m at the very end. Hm.
How’s it going with you guys?

Hi Jo,
Just discovered your blog and am glad to learn you’re a fan of some Thorne Smith inspired movies (Topper, I Married A Witch) as well as the those other great Cary Grant classics you mentioned (The Awful Truth, My Favorite Wife).
Isn’t Turner Classic Movies the best? I think I’d cancel my cable subscription if they didn’t carry TCM.
Cheers!

Jolie, I, too, love TCM. It’s the best site on cable. One of my favorites is TWO FOR THE ROAD, which screenplay was nominated. It is the ultimate “relationship” movie that shows how they can change when dating & unsuccessful in worklife, to marriage & children with success in worklife, which takes a huge toll on the marriage. I thought Audrey Hepburn & Albert Finney had great chemistry (supposedly, a relationship in RL), & uses an extremely interesting & interweaving story, with the three periods of their life together, differentiated by their clothing & the type of car they’re driving. If it’s on the sked, don’t miss it.
I’ve recently purchased the Ultimate Astaire/Rogers Collector’s Edition DVDs (12), even though I don’t yet have a player. Their films were always faves on TCM for me.
Continuing speaking of films, over the weekend I saw MUSIC FROM THE HEART, with Meryl Streep, which tells a story of how one person can change many lives. This film, about a woman who started the East Harlem Violin Program, shows why I think Streep is USA’s best actor. I was bawling at the end. Really good.
February 6th, 2008 at 10:25 amDrat! I’d forgotten about TCM’s Oscar movie month. Hope I didn’t miss any of my favorites. The Awful Truth is a great one, isn’t it? I love comedies and musicals from the 30s - 60s. Some are actually good…others are so-bad-they’re-good.

February 6th, 2008 at 2:35 pmHi Michael - glad you popped in. I’m definitely interested in your book. :)
Patricia - I LOVED Two for the Road. Loved it. And Music from the Heart was wonderful. As for Astaire/Rogers - I have the set!! Of course I sing along with Fred and Ginger, although from my chair.
Laurie, I always check TCM in my morning search. Thank goodness for DVRs as most of the movies I adore are on at some ungodly hour.
February 8th, 2008 at 3:20 pmOh I love Cary Grant movies. Unfortunately we don’t have TCM up here in Canada, but from the list of movies, I’m very jealous! lol
